Understated Luxury: Inspired Creations Contest Entry

I recently had the pleasure of working with Kelly from Paper Stories and Indie Wed, Stevi from Avery House, and Lauren from Ryan Alexander Events on an entry for the Inspired Creations Contest sponsored by The Sweetest Occasion and Elizabeth Anne Designs.  Thanks to Room 1520 for providing the location and the model (thanks, Haley!) and to Shannon of Plate for her assistance and for lending out some of Plate’s vintage plate collection!

This was an exciting chance for me to explore some new techniques, such as using a floral frog for the centerpiece (actually a very old technique!).  Also, I got to work in the naturalistic style which I have come to love.

Please visit the Sweetest Occasions blog to see more and leave comments!  The winner will be selected on criteria including the comments left on the Sweetest Occasions blog (*hint, hint*)

Eco-Chic Weddings: An Event Planners’ Workshop

Pollen is excited to be a part of the Chicago Green Wedding Alliance‘s workshop on green weddings, being held later this month. Entitled “Eco-Chic Weddings: An Event Planners’ Workshop,” the half-day workshop will highlight achievable ways that wedding planners can incorporate green elements into their weddings. Planners will leave the workshop with real, tangible ways to help their clients plan more eco-friendly weddings.

I’ll speak about why there needs to be concern about such a seemingly harmless aspect of weddings, and offer up ideas for the more sustainable options out there, such as working with locally grown flowers or flower alternatives.  Also, I’ll recommend many simple ways to green up weddings, without compromising their elegance!

The workshop is intended for wedding planners, so please share this info with any planners who may be interested.  Registration information is available here.

Other businesses involved include City Provisions, FIG Catering, Logan Square Kitchen, Pivotal Production, Spilled Ink Press, Tweedle Press, and West Loop Studio.

Indie Wed: Not Your Mama’s Bridal Show

Pollen will be displaying again at Indie Wed this year!  I know, I know…  I’m not much of a wedding show person, either.  But this one is different, I swear!  Indie Wed features more non-traditional wedding vendors.  Ones that lean toward the modern, the edgy, or the eco-friendly.

Last year was fantastic, and this year looks like it’s going to be bigger and better.  Indie Wed will be at the Ravenswood Event Center again this year, right in Pollen’s neighborhood!  Mark your calendar for Saturday, January 29th.  Check out the Indie Wed website for more info and to buy tickets.

FAQ’s: Can You Recommend a Green [insert wedding vendor type here]?

Sure!  I’m happy to recommend caterers, invitation designers, photographers, etc. that I’ve enjoyed working with, and share Pollen’s interest in greener weddings!  Putting together a little directory of other green wedding vendors that I know seemed like a simple idea.  After talking with the folks at Spilled Ink Press, we realized that this simple idea has a lot more potential.

And the Chicago Green Wedding Alliance was born!  The CGWA is a group of like-minded vendors who are working to encourage more mindful weddings and commitment ceremonies.  We’re putting together a directory and a website, planning a workshop on greener weddings, and planning a green wedding show/tour.

The CGWA has a core group of very involved founding members.  Our first task has been to figure out how to vet candidates for membership.  Until we finalize that procedure, let me direct you to the people who have been actively involved with founding the group.

Vendor Spotlight: The Green Tree Studio

I recently visited with Erika Ball of The Green Tree Studio, an eco-friendly photography studio.  Erika snapped some gorgeous shots of some of the things I was working on that weekend, and I was happy to have the chance to find out more about The Green Tree Studio.

In addition to beautiful and eco-friendly photography, The Green Tree Studio gives back to the community in many ways.  Erika started the Little Tree Foundation to send nurses abroad for medical missions, and to support other social and environmental projects.  Talking with Erika really inspired me to think about ways that Pollen can do more.

You can check out more photos that Erika shot during our visit under “Pollen” at http://thegreentreestudio.com/viewing/

Thanks, Erika, for stopping by Pollen!
